This huuuuge Mizpah locket on its original locket chain caught my eye because of its scale, its pristine condition, and the soft gold overlay contrasting against the sleek silver. It’s such a statement. Opening it up, you see two vintage photos of a couple. The woman is actually wearing this very locket and collar. I took them out, and underneath I found the original couple to be homed in this locket. And she is WEARING THIS LOCKET AND COLLAR. And also the brooch the later woman is wearing! They really look very similar - they absolutely have to be related - maybe grandmother and grand daughter? So this pieces is family jewellery. This is what I always suggest to people to do with the photos they find in antique jewellery - keep them in but cover them with your own photos. And then it all creates a story to be uncovered for people like us down the line. Back to the actual piece - modelled in silver, with the lion passant stamp on the bale. Under the photos (another reason to investigate photos) I found the Birmingham date letter for 1884. Can be worn in a myriad of ways. Engraved side up, shiny side up. The chain still retains its original dingle piece (official term) which is unusual these days.
